An unnaturally high birthrate of twins in a small Brazilian town has been linked to Nazi experiments by Auschwitz doctor Josef Mengele. Scientists refute the claims.

The usual birthrate of twins is roughly one in eighty: scientists have long been pondering why this ratio has reached a phenomenal one in five in the small Brazilian settlement of Linha São Pedro near the city of Cândido Godói. Located near the border with Argentina, the small community of largely German descendents has witnessed a boom in twin pregnancies since the 1960s.

Camarasa’s Argument About the Josef Mengele Twins Nazi Experiments

Now, in a book entitled Mengele: the Angel of Death in South America (NORMA, 2008), Argentine historian Jorge Camarasa claims that experiments by Josef Mengele, the former Auschwitz doctor, are at the heart of the phenomenon.

Dr Josef Mengele, known as the “Angel of Death”, has been attributed with causing the deaths of tens of thousands of concentration camp hostages at Auschwitz. Dr Mengele had been at the forefront of Nazi experiments in his quest to increase the Aryan birthrate through twin pregnancies. After fleeing from the approaching Red Army in 1945, Josef Mengele headed for South America where it is said he continued with his Nazi experiments.

Camarasa claims, after having spoken with the people of Linha São Pedro, that Josef Mengele visited the settlement frequently in the early 1960s posing as a medic. Here he carried out further clandestine Nazi experiments on the womenfolk, offering them medical care and often supplying unnamed tablets and taking blood samples. It is during this period that the twin pregnancies are said to have increased to disproportionate levels.

Camarasa also points to the physical characteristics of the twins as a sign of Dr Mengele’s influence; many being what he terms “blond haired, blue eyed Aryans”.

Brazilian Experts Dismiss the Claims Regarding the Dr Josef Mengele Twins Experiments

A team of Brazilian medical geneticists had previously visited the town in 1994 to investigate the abnormally high rate of twin births. Though they themselves found no conclusive explanations they reject the new ideas of Camarasa and any influence upon the settlement by Josef Mengele.

The ‘Aryan’ appearance of the twins, they state, is not so peculiar in a settlement of German immigrants who often possess such physical features. Linda Geddes, writing for the New Scientist online, quoted Ursula Matte, a member of the genetics team. Matte also doubts Dr Mengele’s abilities in regards to such genetic transformations: “I don't think Mengele would have the knowledge, not to mention the means, to engender the rise in twin births in this community”, ("Nazi 'Angel of Death' not responsible for town of twins", January 27, 2009).

The Brazilian scientists conclude (from blood tests taken from the twins) that a high level of inbreeding within the population, as found in other isolated communities, is the most probable cause for the abnormal occurrence of twin births.

Josef Mengele – Nazi Experiments Inconclusive in Linha São Pedro

While many of the inhabitants of Linha São Pedro now believe that a Nazi war criminal had lived within their community, scientific research does not support conclusively the claims of Camarasa. What is certain is that Josef Mengele, the “Angel of Death”, lived in freedom in South America for 18 years. He took his secrets to a watery grave in Brazil when he died in a swimming accident in 1979.
